Data Recovery: To restore a computer's Operating System after it has failed; you will need to format the hard-drive. Here lies the problem, there are files, photos and other data you want & need to keep. And if you format your hard-drive your files, photos and other data be gone forever. How Windows uses your hard-drive: When you partition and format a hard-drive think of a barn with millions of stalls with gates and Windows as the barn manager. When you save a file to a hard-drive Windows the manager go to the nearest stalls with open gates and places information (8 bits) in each stall and shuts its gate. Windows job is, only save information in stalls with open gates so the next time you save something on your H/D Windows looks for the nearest open gates to store the information in. When you delete a file all Windows does is open the gate and leaves the information in the stalls. It is very important if the information you deleted is to be recovered, you Do Not save anything else, because Windows will overwrite the information in nearest open stalls. And now you know how your H/D becomes fragmented because each file you save is a different size.
